Roger Bacon Wins Back-to-Back National Titles at the USA Underwater Hockey 2011 U.S. National Championships!
On a bright and sunny Sunday in late June 2011, at the USA Underwater Hockey 2011 U.S. National Championships at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center in Santa Clarita, California, the Roger Bacon High School Underwater Hockey Varsity Team successfully defended its "B" Division national title, once again finishing in first place in the "B" Division with an overall tournament record of nine wins and four losses.
In the opening rounds of the national tournament on Friday and Saturday, 24 and 25 June, Roger Bacon’s Varsity Team played very well, finishing those two days with a record of six wins and three losses. On those two days, Roger Bacon Varsity defeated teams from the University of Illinois, Michigan State University, Georgia Tech University, San Diego, the Los Angeles “B” Team and their younger teammates on the Roger Bacon Junior Varsity Team. RB’s three losses on those two days came at the hands of the University of Florida, George Mason University, and Denver. All three of these teams were from the elite “A” Division and the University of Florida was the 2010 national champion in the elite “A” division.
On Sunday June 26, the final day of the tournament, Roger Bacon High School Varsity Team's record was three wins and one loss.
The day began at 8:00 am with the Roger Bacon Varsity Team, seeded second in the "B" Division, playing in a cross-over game against the 7th seed of the "A" Division, Seattle. In a hard-fought game which was close until close to the end of the match, Seattle defeated Roger Bacon Varsity by a score of 7 to 3. The Roger Bacon goals were scored by David Luken '10, Nick Luken '12, and Andrew Kalvelage '03. As a result of this loss, Roger Bacon would compete in the "B" Division playoffs and Seattle would compete in the elite "A" Division.
At 9:45 am, Roger Bacon then faced the "B" Team from the host team, Los Angeles. Roger Bacon quickly took the lead in the first half and never looked back, defeating the Los Angeles "B" Team by a score of 7 to 0. The Roger Bacon goals were scored by Kevin Anneken '13, Alex Mathis '12, Joey Hinnenkamp '08, and Andrew Kalvelage '03.
At 12 noon, Roger Bacon had another close game which resulted in a victory, as the Roger Bacon Varsity Team defeated San Diego by a score of 6 to 4. The Roger Bacon goals were scored by Kevin Anneken '13 and Andrew Kalvelage '03.
The championship game of the "B" Division was at 5:15 pm, and the game pitted Roger Bacon Varsity against San Francisco's "B" Team. The San Francisco team jumped out to a quick 2 to 0 lead. But then the Roger Bacon Spartans began their comeback, scoring two goals to tie the game up with a score of 2 all at the half.
In the second half, Roger Bacon came out swinging, scoring goals that San Francisco simply could not match. David Luken '10 scored a goal for Roger Bacon on an advantage puck situation close to the San Francisco goal. Roger Bacon continued to lengthen the lead as the half progressed with incoming junior forward, Michelle Casey '13, scoring the final goal for Roger Bacon just before time expired. The final score was Roger Bacon 6, San Francisco "B" 2. The Roger Bacon goals were scored by Collin Wetzel '02, Andrew Kalvelage '03, David Luken '10, and Michelle Casey '13.
This victory over San Francisco gave Roger Bacon its fourth national title in the annual USA Underwater Hockey National Championships. Last year, Roger Bacon won the "B" Division national title at the 2010 U.S. National Championships in Gainesville, Florida. Previously, Roger Bacon won the "C" Division in the 2001 U.S. National Championships at San Jose State University and the "C" Division in the 2007 U.S. National Championships at the University of Minnesota.

Meanwhile, also at Nationals, the Roger Bacon Junior Varsity Team played very hard in its games and finished the tournament in 8th place in the "B" Division. The younger players played well and gained valuable experience which will serve them well in future contests.
After the conclusion of the tournament, the Spartans were able to spend a couple of days in Los Angeles, touring the Franciscan Mission San Fernando Rey de España, following the Hollywood Walk of Fame, visiting the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, and enjoying some well deserved relaxation on the beaches at Malibu.
The Underwater Hockey Team sincerely thanks all of the local businesses, the Roger Bacon alumni, and the members of the Roger Bacon community who so generously sponsored their trip to 2011 U.S. National Championships. Without their generous support, the trip would not have been possible.

ROGER BACON HIGH SCHOOL UNDERWATER HOCKEY TEAM WINS A NATIONAL TITLE IN
THE U.S.A. UNDERWATER HOCKEY 2010 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Players win in Gainesville, Florida on 27 June 2010
On a bright and sunny Sunday, 27 June 2010, at the USA Underwater Hockey 2010 National Championships at the Dwight H. Hunter Municipal Pool in Gainesville, Florida, the Roger Bacon High School Underwater Hockey Varsity Team won a national title, finishing in first place in the "B" Division with an overall tournament record of nine wins, zero losses, and one tie.
On Friday and Saturday, 25 and 26 June, Roger Bacon’s Varsity Team played very well in the “B” Division round robin play. Roger Bacon defeated teams from Chicago, Connecticut, Georgia Tech University, and the University of Florida. Roger Bacon’s only tie came on Saturday in round robin play against Washington DC’s “B” team. Finishing round robin play with a record of 6 wins, zero losses, and one tie, Roger Bacon went into the playoff round as the first seed in the “B” Division.
On Sunday, 27 June 2010, the final day of the tournament, Roger Bacon began the day by defeating the 8th seed, Georgia Tech University’s “B” Team by a score of 7 to 0.
Around noon, Roger Bacon Varsity then faced Washington DC’s “B” Team. In round robin play on Saturday, these two teams had fought to a 2-2 tie. Sunday’s game, however, would have a different outcome. Roger Bacon took the lead in the first half and never looked back, defeating Washington DC's "B" Team by a score of 3 to 0.
The championship game of the "B" Division was a rematch of a game from Saturday's round robin play between the Roger Bacon Varsity Team and the University of Florida's "B" Team. In a slow game marred by many fouls called against both teams, Roger Bacon took advantage of a first half power play with a Gator sitting in the penalty box to score first and go up 1-0. Later in the first half, the University of Florida was called for a penalty which stopped an almost certain Roger Bacon goal from being scored, resulting in a penalty shot for Roger Bacon. Roger Bacon took advantage of the penalty shot and scored, then taking a 2-0 lead. Finally, Roger Bacon scored just before the end of the first half, going up 3-0.
The second half continued to see many penalties called on both teams, with Roger Bacon players Greg Moeller and Andrew Kalvelage spending time in the penalty box. In these power plays for the University of Florida, however, Roger Bacon stiffened its defense and kept UF out of the goal even while being down a man in the pool. Roger Bacon then scored its fourth and final goal as time expired. The game ended in a Roger Bacon victory with a final score of 4 to 0.
This victory gave Roger Bacon its third national title in the annual USA Underwater Hockey National Championships. Roger Bacon had previously won the "C" Division in the 2001 U.S. National Championships at San Jose State University and the "C" Division in the 2007 U.S. National Championships at the University of Minnesota.
